The goal of the Montessori program is to support people living with dementia by creating a prepared environment, filled with cues and memory support allowing the opportunity for “meaningful work” which enables individuals to care for themselves, others, and their community so that they may live as independently as possible. MILC trains homecare providers and ALR staff on Montessori centered care, through workshops or one on one consulting. No matter the age or ability of a person, participation in everyday life develops a feeling of worthiness in person, called upon to share it in an active way.
Caring for a loved one living with dementia in your home can be both difficult and rewarding. Montessori for Aging and Dementia in the home will allow you the opportunity to help your loved one age in place in as safe, purposeful way. By creating cues and memory supports throughout your home the person you are caring for will have more independence and therefore find it more pleasant to be at home. I will help you to create a purposeful environment in your home for your loved one to engage in activities and projects they once loved or are just discovering. By tapping into the preserved memories and skills your aging adult still possess we can truly create a more rewarding experience for you both.
I will come directly to you and work side by side with you and your loved one in the home. I suggest an initial two hour observation visit and we will design the rest from there.
Montessori for Aging and Dementia requires a cultural shift in how we perceive those living with memory loss. We’ll spend time discovering what level individuals are capable of participating and then create meaningful work and roles within your community to help them thrive. Montessori is a process and will take time and practice to learn and adapt into your existing system of care. I suggest an initial two-hour workshop for caregivers with ongoing consulting, including creating a Montessori prepared environment, to support them in the beginning. Every facility is different, so I am very flexible.
We can create, together, a customized program for you and your staff.
Is your school interested in intergenerational programming?
I can help you get started!
Whether you are located near an existing Assisted Living Community and would like to start a program between them and your school, or if you would like to invite aging adults experiencing memory loss to partner with your community as reading partners, guest speakers or volunteers, I can help you coordinate things. I will help your children understand what dementia and memory loss looks like in aging adults and give you a number of Montessori activities the two groups can do together. With little effort or programming changes you have the opportunity to change the way generations relate to one another.
Let me help you make this happen!
